2 | Lessons involving active participation were organized in co-operation with local community to promote flexible, independent and creative education of students. In these lessons, the students and active participants were empowered by a narrative relationship that was established between them, and extended the collaboration between the university and local community.
Primary care is based on the principle ‘health is a basic human right of all people’, and the right guarantying independent participation and self-decision making. In the professions working for woman's health, especially reproductive health/rights (i.e. rights concerning on sexual and reproductive health), it is important to focus care on the individual needs and demands of a woman, as stated in the Program of the Fourth World Woman Meeting.
Our maternal nursing school practiced the lessons involving active participation to enable better understanding of woman, and studying care from the talks about life cycle involving medical and nursing care. The students accepted these lessons positively, as improving their study, and appreciated gaining new knowledge and going along with the participants' attitude. This study evaluated the educational effects of the lessons on the basis of the work of Kathleen B. Gaberson et al. ‘Educational effects expected in nursing education’, cited in our previous report ‘The result of lessons involving active participation of persons with psychical disorders’.
1.The lessons involving active participation established an educational method promoting the independent going along with the woman's attitude by the interaction between the students and active participants.
2.The talks of active participants enabled the students to understand primary health care from the viewpoint of woman's reproductive health/rights.
3.The experience of talks of pregnant woman motivated the students, and opened new possibilities for their clinical practice in maternal nursing.
4.The active participants and students are living in the same community of universal design, and connected to novel possibilities of university.
The lessons involving active participation in clinical maternal nursing were shown to be important as an education-al method that enables understanding of care and its roles from the viewpoint of woman's health. |
