2 | Toward the advanced age of life, it becomes more important to consider various issues such as the meanings of getting old, how to get old, preparation for the old age and relations with other generations, as your own concern. The elderly people begin to realize that they became old by recognizing physical, emotional and social changes. In their daily livings, they face many different situations. They are becoming to accept the fact that they are getting old by sometimes taking things positively and other times struggling with certain situations. There is a difference of age recognition among them, but whether one can live independently and individually is determined by how he/she accept the senility.
The family members in close contact with the elderly observe closely how a person change by aging and become to accept such situation. This is considered possibly affecting the family living with the elderly a great deal in forming their senses of aging.
We conducted a survey on people at their age of 70 and over plus the family members living with them in regard to how the elderly identifies their senility and how the families accept their changes. The following are the results of this research:1. Age indentification were failing eyesight, declined physical strength, forgetfulness and failuuuure of memory; numerous in this order.2. The family members living with the elderly people recognized their physical aging such as failing eyesight or declined strength, but not many sensed their emotional senility. There was a awareness gap between the elderly and the families.3. Many elderly people recognized their emotional againg such as forgetfulness and failure of memory, but ones who feel “pitiful” for such changes were many among the people at their early advanced age, and there was a meaningful difference from the elderly people at their late advanced age.4. For family members, a father was an emotional strength and a mother who took charge of home chores was a person practically useful in the daily life.5. There was a diffesence of sense regarding “talking time” between the elderly people and families. As inter-generation communication is an important issue, making efforts to actively communicate with each other as well as learning opportunities are essestial. The people at the early age being in the aging stage of life, are insecure as they are struggling with various changes in order to gradually accept their senility. It is very important for the medical staff as well as the families to fully understand this. |
