| 内容記述2 | Nurses understand people who are living in the society. By living in that society and culture themselves, nurses' experiences and senses gained through diverse relationships help them better understand their patients. However, there is a reality that a number of nurses find difficulty playing their full roles in the society or home under the circumstances that they work in shifts. Most nurses are women. In a society where role distinction by gender is still deeply seated, the nurses are expected to reconcile not only work and home but also society; and they are likly to compromise much to live in such a society. The purpose of this research is to study how the shift-basis work is affecting nurses in their sociality-cultivating activities. The following are findings from the questionnaire-survey of 440 nurses who work in a general hospital:
1. The average age of the nurses was 31.9 years old in the 3-shift group, 45.7 in the night shift, and 38.5 in the day shift, which shows a large difference between these groups. One-third of the nurses in the 3-shift group have a child or children living with them, and percentage of such is even higher among nurses in the night shift and day shift groups.2. The day shift group, without having to work on night shift, tends to live healthier and be less tired than those in the 3-shift or night shift groups. Many of the 3-shift and day-shift groups consider off-days for their physical and mental refreshment. Particularly in the 3-shift group, more than half people actually try to take enough rest on their holidays.3. Compared to the night shift, the 3-shift group socializes more with friends and acquaintances outside work, but are less active in local community activities; seeking information about the society, and volunteer services. Fewer people have meals with their families and share household chores with their husbands among the 3-shift group, but more night-shift nurses feel that their work makes their children lonely and places a greater burden on other family members.4. When comparing the 3-shift and the day-shift, more people of day-shift feel that can usually dine with their families, but that there were no outstanding differences with regard to other family activities or overall social volvement.
5. By changing work section or shift arrangements, or by saving more time by driving to work, the nurses arrange time for their family activities.
6. The percentage of nurses living with their families is high, and many of the maried ones in particular live with their parents or parents-in-law. In mnay cases 3 generations live together. This is a tendency typical of this region. However, even among single nurses in the 3-shift group, there was a tendency to live with their father and mother. It is considered that social and family activities are managed with great support from family members. |
